Wes went in for his biopsy this morning and the surgery went really well. They were able to successfully get an air tube in while he was under anesthesia. He didn't have to be awake for it and he didn't need a tracheotomy. That alone was a huge relief! The doctor removed a big chunk of the mass and Wes said he can already feel a difference in his breathing... which is actually weird because he didn't know that he couldn't breath in the first place. But, a good kind of weird of course!
After the surgery, the doctor called me in and showed me photos of his throat and of the mass in it. I honestly had a hard time finding his airway because all I saw was the mass everywhere. The doctor said there was a lot more tissue in that area than there should be. So, I asked the question...
"Do you think it's cancer?"
She couldn't be certain without getting the pathology results, but she said she's 80-90% sure it is. My heart sank. I didn't want to tell Wes, and yet I knew I had to. It's not something you ever think you would have to do.
At this point, we don't have the results, so we're taking it one step at a time. And if it is cancer, I know Wes will be okay. He is one tough cookie.
As for Wesley's recovery, he's doing amazing! Already had 2 bowls of soup and 2 bowls of sherbert. He's up and moving around and really doing great!
